THE FLITHER PICKERS and THE HERRING GIRLS are two short novels, now published together in one volume, with some of the photographs by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, that inspired the stories.
These are tales that reflect the hard lives of the fishing families of the North East Coast of Yorkshire in the early 1900’s and Scottish men and women of the Herring Fleet, who travelled down the coast through the late summer and autumn, pursuing the shoals of herrings.
