THE FLITHER PICKERS AND HERRING GIRLS

THE FLITHER PICKERS and THE HERRING GIRLS are two short novels, now published together in one volume, with some of the photographs by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, that inspired the stories.

These are tales that reflect the hard lives of the fishing families of the North East Coast of Yorkshire in the early 1900’s and Scottish men and women of the Herring Fleet, who travelled down the coast through the late summer and autumn, pursuing the shoals of herrings.

DARK FORTUNE

The year is 1861 and Whitby has suffered the worst Lifeboat disaster in living memory. Paulina’s fisherman father has been badly injured and her mother too urgently needs a doctor. What would you do if you needed medical care, but hadn’t got the money to pay for it? What would you risk? What would you dare?

This is a story of mourning, recovery, resourcefulness and community - at a time of boom in the Whitby Jet Industry!

Theresa Tomlinson returns to Victorian local history themes in the style of her previous novels THE FLITHER PICKERS and THE HERRING GIRLS - Young Adult upwards.
